Are you, or are you not.. A WRITER?

YOU HAVE TO CLAIM IT BEFORE YOU BECOME IT

So,

Let's address an elephant that has sauntered into the room…

ARE YOU, OR ARE YOU NOT, A WRITER?

I have been reading a lot about what makes a writer…
What makes a GOOD writer good, and what makes a good writer GREAT…

The way many see it - if you want to be a writer - WRITE.
And of course, that’s true… to a point...
Of course to be a writer you need to WRITE..

But

Does that mean that if I write a shopping list - I am a writer?
If I scrawl a note to my son on the fridge whiteboard (clothes in washer) - I am a writer?
If I put up indignant YouTube comments (today's equivalent of 'letters to the editor) - am I a writer?

Or do I have to be holed up in an ivory tower, phone off hook (which means ‘on silent’ people - hook? What hook?), keyboard-cramped fingers flying in all directions, bleeding my heart onto the page?

The way I see it is like this:
if you want to BE a writer then you have to CALL yourself a writer.
And if you CALL yourself a write, then you simply have to WANT to be a writer.

I mean, that is where it starts…
If you WANT to be a writer, a shopping list is soon going to feel insufficient to feed that appetite.

Because at the heart of it, THAT is what it is…
An apatite…
A need…
A longing…
A hole...

So, is it OK to call yourself something, before you become it?

I mean it’s not like you will be cutting people open (although metaphorically speaking, you might be/should be!).

  • I called myself a copywriter before I got paid for my first job.
  • I called myself an author before I published my first book (even if it was only to myself).
  • My first massage I felt like a fraud, but I still went ahead...
  • And I ALWAYS called myself a writer… even when I wasn’t writing every day…

Some might scoff at this, and call it posturing, or pretending, or dreaming…

But didn’t everything significant you have done or been or had, begin with a dream?
Didn’t you start with the idea…
A glimmer, a spark, an inspired flash?
The desire for the thing...
Then later, sometimes MUCH later, came action?

If you want to do it, OWN it..
If you want to be a writer, CALL yourself a writer… your fingers will catch up…
If you want to be an author, CALL yourself an author… the books are waiting for you to bring them into being.

Try on the uniform.
Walk around in it for a bit.
Catch your reflection in the mirror.
See how others react.
DO you like it?
DOES it feel right?

Because if it feels so fucking RIGHT, you might NEVER take it off again.
So, wear the outfit.
Talk the talk.
Walk the walk.
Become the thing.
Even if you have to grow into it for a bit.
Even if at first it’s a little awkward and clunky, and your training wheels are still very much on…

What do YOU think? What does it take to be a writer?

So what are you waiting for...

The world needs your story: write now!
